PRECONFERENCE

Thursday, October 3rd

8:00-5:00 PM Advance Medical Life Support (AMLS) Hybrid Provider Course: Sponsored by the Oregon EMS Association

This 16-hour course is for EMTs, paramedics, nurses, physician assistants, nurse practitioners,  and physicians. Upon successful completion of the course, students receive a certificate of  completion, a wallet card recognizing them as AMLS providers for 4 years, and 16 hours of  CAPCE credit. This course is offered as a hybrid course where students take 8 hours of the  course online, followed by 8 hours in the classroom.

Advanced Medical Life Support (AMLS) remains the gold standard of education for emergency  medical assessment and treatment. Endorsed by the National Association of EMS Physicians,  AMLS emphasizes using the AMLS Assessment Pathway, a systematic tool for assessing and  managing common medical conditions with urgent accuracy.

In the third edition of AMLS, students learn to recognize and manage common medical crises  through realistic case-based scenarios that challenge students to apply their knowledge to highly  critical patients. The course emphasizes using scene size-up, first impression, history, interactive  group discussion on differential diagnosis and potential treatment strategies, and physical exam  to systematically rule out and consider possibilities and probabilities in treating patients’ medical  crises. The third edition of the AMLS Library of patient simulations allows students to apply  critical thinking skills to various patient presentations. Additional features include patient  simulation monitor images and ECGs provided by iSimulate to enhance students’ experience.

8:00-12:00 CARDIOGRAPHY – Robert Victorino

This four-hour session will thoroughly review 3 and 12 lead ECG interpretation. If you have  previously attended my events, you may remember that I approached CE as a discussion among  colleagues to tap into the vast amount of experience in the room. This is intended to be a guided  conversation, not a lecture. We will cover everything from action potential to axis deviation— science!

8:00-12:00 LVAD PATIENT CARE FOR FIRST RESPONDERS Mark Puhlman

This program is designed to provide a comprehensive overview of the components and principles  of operation of the HeartMate II, HeartMate 3, and HeartWare Left Ventricular Assist Devices  (LVADs). It will also discuss assessing, stabilizing, and transporting these patients.

This program is intended for First Responders to familiarize them with issues related to  managing LVAD patients in emergencies. It will include didactic and hands-on components to  allow the participants to manage simulated emergencies related to LVAD patients in the field.

1:00-5:00 PHARMACOLOGY FOR THE A-EMT AND EMT-I Nancy Shantel

Now that you’ve taken the classes and passed your testing, do you feel you need to have a  refresher or ask those questions that have been nagging you. In this session Nancy will review  pharmacology, review dosages and for those willing, practice your IV skills.

1:00-3:00 STOP THE BLEED – TRAIN THE TRAINER – Jim Cole

Stop the Bleed has become the standard program for treating significant wounds in the pre hospital setting. This 2-hour course will review the principles and let you practice the skills to  become an effective trainer to go back to your agency and teach this course.

3:00-5:00 WILDERNESS MEDICINE – THINING OUTSIDE THE KIT – Jim Cole

In this presentation, Jim will discuss ways to treat injuries in the wilderness without an  ambulance full of equipment or even a good trauma bag. Learn how to improvise and treat an injured person in the wilderness with what you have.

1:00-5:00 ESCAPE ROOM SIM 4 - 1-HOUR SESSIONS - Robert Victorino

Imagine you and your team of four are in a room, and you only have one hour to evaluate and treat your patient…. The only problem is that all your equipment is hidden, requiring you to answer quizzes and figure out “puzzles” to reach it…. Can you feel the pressure mounting as the clock ticks….?

Be sure to assemble your team of 4 responders to solve the mystery of Robert’s ESCAPE ROOM SIM
